Co-trimoxazole in prevention of bacteriuria after prostatectomy.
نویسندگان
چکیده
In a prospective, double-blind trial prophylactic cotrimoxazole produced a highly significant reduction in the incidence of bacteriuria after prostatectomy. Only two out of 38 patients who received the drug developed bacteriuria compared with 19 out of 36 patients on placebo. Klebsiella-Enterobacter spp and coagulase-negative staphylococci were responsible for most infections. Although co-trimoxazole prophylaxis is obviously effective, widespread use might increase the incidence of bacterial resistance.

Single dose trimethoprim for urinary tract infection.
A randomised clinical trial of single dose trimethoprim against a seven day course of co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole) for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection was carried out in 106 children aged between 2 and 16 years. Of the 50 children with confirmed urinary tract infections who were followed up 48 hours after treatment with a single dose of trimethoprim all...
متن کاملCo-trimoxazole sensitivity testing: comparison of separate and combined disk agar diffusion techniques.
Five hundred and seven strains of bacteria isolated from the urine of patients with significant bacteriuria (more than 10(8) colony-forming units per litre) were tested for sensitivity to co-trimoxazole by the agar diffusion technique. Each organism was tested with a combined disk containing trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole in a primary sensitivity test and, at a standardised inoculum, with b...
متن کاملBacteriuria in patients undergoing prostatectomy.
A review of the literature revealed that the reported incidence of bacteriuria arising before and after prostatectomy varied considerably, that there had been little investigation of the organisms isolated, and that the value of chemoprophylaxis at the time of prostatectomy was unproven. Using standard criteria and technical procedures, 248 patients undergoing prostatectomy were studied over a ...
متن کاملChallenges facing effective implementation of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis in children born to HIV-infected mothers in the public health facilities
BACKGROUND If children born to HIV-infected mothers are not identified early, approximately 30% of them will die within the first year of life due to opportunistic infections. In order to prevent morbidity and mortality due to opportunistic infections in children, the World Health Organization recommends the use of prophylaxis using co-trimoxazole. However, the challenges affecting effective im...
متن کاملImplementation of co-trimoxazole preventive therapy policy for malaria in HIV-infected pregnant women in the public health facilities in Tanzania
BACKGROUND In 2011, Tanzania adopted a policy for provision of daily co-trimoxazole prophylaxis to HIV-infected pregnant women for prevention of malaria and other opportunistic infections. As per the policy, HIV-infected pregnant women should not be given sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) for intermittent preventive therapy. The challenges associated with this policy change and the extent to which...
